Nu Broadens Its Global Expansion With a US Banking Launch
Nu has launched retail banking services in the United States. It also introduced Nu Global, a multi-currency account for sending money abroad.
The launch marks Nu’s first move outside Latin America, where it serves more than 140 million customers across Brazil, Mexico and Colombia.
The Nu Account pays a variable 3.50% annual percentage yield (APY), credited daily. Lead Bank, an FDIC-insured partner, holds the deposits.
The account comes with a metal debit card, savings goals, and free transfers to Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. Nu plans to add more countries to that list.
Customers who add the Nu Credit Card and complete qualifying transactions can raise that yield to 4.50% APY on savings goals up to $10,000.
The card runs on Mastercard, carries no annual fee, and pays 1.5% cashback, rising to 2% once customers meet separate qualifying conditions.
Nu applied for a national bank charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency last autumn. It received conditional approval in January 2026.
For now, it is operating through a partner bank rather than its own charter.

“More than a decade of unwavering commitment to customers, disciplined growth, profitable execution, and a business built to scale is what gives us the confidence to take this next step now,”
said David Vélez, Founder and Chief Executive, Nu.
